From April 2026, work on the A629 phase 2 Halifax town centre project will move to the bottom of town. Access to the town centre and attractions will be maintained while we deliver work around the east of Halifax - however you choose to travel.

Please plan ahead and allow more time for journeys in and out of Halifax. Use the A629 route and take the diversion to avoid congestion and possible queues at the bottom of town.

Square Road outside Square Chapel Arts Centre will become a welcoming gateway to the east of Halifax.
The new layout creates a new welcoming gateway to The Piece Hall, Square Chapel and the town centre from the railway station.

Walking or wheeling

Footways and crossings will be open during the work. There will be times when we need to close them for safety reasons. When we need to close footpaths, we will make sure there is still access to businesses and residential properties, and we will provide suitable diversions. Diversions will be signposted, and we’ll make it clear where to cross the road.

Rail

Footways and crossings will be open, and access to the town centre and attractions will be maintained through the work. When we need to close footpaths, we will provide suitable diversions.

Rail replacement coaches will continue to operate.  Check Halifax Station National Rail for pick-up and drop-off information.

If driving, you will no longer be able to approach the rail station car park from Church Street. This section of the road will be one-way (south only) during the works. Other routes will remain open.

Bus

Some bus stops may be affected, closed, or temporarily moved. We work with local bus operators to make sure bus drivers and passengers are aware of any changes in advance and accessibility is maximised.

West Yorkshire Metro provide information about disruption to bus services in West Yorkshire and about changes resulting from the A629 phase 2 Halifax town centre project.

Roads

Routes through and around Halifax will be maintained. Use the A629 route and take the diversion to avoid congestion and possible queues at the bottom of town. Please plan ahead and allow more time for journeys around Halifax.

A diversion will be in operation for those approaching Halifax from the south, which will take traffic away from the work zones and around the west (top) of town. Temporary traffic lights and localised diversions will be in place to keep traffic moving around work areas.

Vehicles will only be able to travel southbound along Church Street during the work. Access to New Road from South Parade/Church Street/Prescott Street will cease.

Blackledge will remain one-way, although there may be some temporary restrictions to access at the eastern entrance, and closures from May to September related to concerts at The Piece Hall.

Parking

Maps, charges, opening hours, and other useful information are available for car parks in Halifax and Halifax town centre on-street parking

Diversion

A diversion will direct traffic away from Shaw Hill, and around the A629 for town centre destinations.

Map

The diversion route, marked with a green arrow on the A629, will allow access to the town centre destinations from the south. The diversion starts at the junction with Shaw Hill.

Temporary traffic lights are in place at locations east of the town centre to keep traffic moving around work zones, shown in red.

The direction of travel for the temporary one-way route is marked with a green arrow on Church Street.

There will be no access to the south entrance to New Road – marked with a no-entry symbol.

A diversion around the A629 will allow access to the town centre for those driving from south of Halifax.
Use the diversion around the A629 for town centre destinations.

Diversion for HGVs

An alternative route for HGVs will be available via A629 Skircoat Road, Portland Place, Commercial Street, Fountain Street, Barum Top, Bull Green, Cow Green, Broad Street, Northgate, and Winding Road.

Work zones

Travel will be possible throughout the area and the four main work zones:

Lower Kirkgate

Routes through the area will remain open. Temporary traffic lights will be in place around Halifax Minster and Matalan. Please plan ahead and allow more time for your journey.

Square Road

Routes through the area will remain open. Temporary lights will be in place to manage traffic passing through the junction at the bottom of Horton Street and Halifax Rail Station. Please plan ahead and allow more time for your journey.

Alfred Street East and Square Road will shut for short periods during construction. Square Road will only close once the new section of road is open. Travel along Church Street will only be available southbound during work.

Charles Street and Smithy Street

Temporary traffic lights will be in place to manage traffic on Smithy Street. At a later stage, travel along Charles Street will be limited to northbound traffic only, with a diversion to maintain access for those who may have travelled southbound.

Church Street

Travel along Church Street will only be available southbound during the work.

My business or property is in this area, and I have a concern or question.
